But there can only be one winner – and for 2019, we’re very pleased to announce that it’s ceramic artist Ula Saniawa.

Ula Award Win

Ula Saniawa

She receives a match-funded place at professional maker studio Cockpit Arts Holborn for one year, including studio space, business and professional development services and an insurance package from CLEAR (worth £2,500 in total).

Ula creates bespoke ceramic art, inspired by ‘tactility, vulnerability and the source of emotional human connection’, under her own unit89 label (http://www.unit89.co.uk).

She describes her work as part of a ‘personal inquiry in emotional human connection through materiality…exploring an innate clash of perfection and imperfection’.

Primarily using hand-built, unglazed porcelain, she adds processes incorporating ‘the accumulation of gestures, materials and elements’, leading to ‘a series of pieces created through the same process…but completely unique’.

Ula tells us:

“I am thrilled to be chosen as a recipient of The Cockpit Arts/CLEAR Insurance Award 2019 and cannot wait to join the uniquely creative community at the Deptford site.

Having gained experience in ceramics after my degree in architecture, I feel ready to merge my love for tactile materiality and the creation of spatial environments and to take on more ambitious, larger scale installation projects.

In this pivotal time in my practice this opportunity means a lot to me, as the advice and business support of The Cockpit Arts will provide a structure that is so vital for larger scale projects.

With this wonderful foundation for development I feel encouraged to take on opportunities which I have always dreamt of, but seemed unattainable only a year ago.”

Congratulations Ula!
